Wisdom Tooth Extractions

Caroline Springs Oral Surgery

Wisdom teeth sometimes require proactive extraction because of how they affect a person’s overall oral health. Due to their location, third molars tend to be more challenging to clean, making them more likely to develop cavities and periodontal infections.

Why Do Wisdom Teeth Get Impacted?

Depending on the situation, some people do not have enough room for their wisdom teeth to come in all the way. This lack of space can cause their third molars to become impacted, develop at an angle or wedge themselves into adjacent teeth.

The pressure caused by impacted wisdom teeth can damage the healthy teeth next to them. Pressure towards the back of your mouth can ultimately cause shifting and crowding in your bite. It’s not uncommon for wisdom tooth eruption to trigger tooth misalignment elsewhere in your mouth (especially towards the front of your smile.)

We’ll need to take an X-ray of your mouth to see the position of your wisdom teeth and how they related to the ones around them.

Can I Get Sedation During Oral Surgery?

We offer a variety of different sedation options to keep you comfortable during your wisdom tooth surgery. Depending on your preferences and the complexity of your case, you can remain conscious or feel like you’re napping though the entire procedure.

Choose between relaxing nitrous oxide (happy gas), oral conscious sedation, IV sedation and general anaesthesia. We’ll discuss each option during your consultation to determine which one you qualify for and the best method for your procedure.

As always, your safety is vital to us. We ask that you share any recent hospitalisations, medications taken or medical conditions on your health intake form.

What About My Teenager?

If your teen is starting to complain of wisdom tooth pain, we encourage you to schedule an evaluation. Most third molar extractions are scheduled during the teenage years. But since wisdom teeth keep developing as late as age 30, it’s not uncommon to have them taken out during a person’s mid to late-20s.

What’s Oral Surgery Recovery Like?

Having your wisdom teeth removed can improve the health of your neighbouring teeth and reduce your risk of secondary infections. We’ll take an X-ray of your jaw to determine the positioning location of each third molar.

If extraction is recommended, we’ll usually take all four teeth out at the same appointment (especially if sedation is used). The entire procedure usually takes less than an hour.

When it’s time to head home, we’ll give you written instructions to follow. Be sure to keep several soft foods on hand, which won’t irritate your extraction sites. Some good examples include yogurt, pudding, ice cream, gelatine and oatmeal.

In most cases we will place a dissolvable suture, which goes away on its own within a couple of weeks. Traditional sutures will need to be removed in our practice about 10 days after surgery.
