What are Six Month Smiles?

Six Month Smiles is a cosmetic orthodontic option that uses clear custom-made braces that focus on straightening the teeth that show when you smile. The treatment works in six months, though times may vary for each individual.

Six Month Smiles can address a number of cosmetic concerns, including:
- Crooked teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Crowded teeth

For those who don’t want to commit to traditional orthodontic treatment, our six-month braces are an excellent alternative to help address any cosmetic concerns they may have about their smile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Six Month Smiles uses the latest techniques and technology to move your teeth safely and quickly with clear adult braces. The treatment uses unique, clear braces and focuses on moving the teeth that show when you smile.

The most common way to move your front teeth is by using coloured braces that are fixed to your front teeth. Six Month Smiles works by using light force to move the teeth into a better position. The brackets and wires are discreetly coloured and barely visible.

Six Month Smiles uses low levels of force to gently move your teeth, with emphasis on the cosmetic appearance rather than the position of your bite by using standard orthodontic mechanics.

There are fewer risks involved with Six Month Smiles. The force used with the braces is lighter and teeth are rarely pulled out.

Six Month Smile is for purely cosmetic improvement, only focusing on the teeth you can see when you smile. The bone is less dense in the front of your mouth and the teeth have only one root, making them easier to move.

Six Month Smiles should not be compared to traditional methods, as they are used for different purposes. Traditional orthodontic methods are used mainly in children to move the jaw and teeth to improve function. Six Month Smiles is for purely cosmetic reasons and is used mainly on adults.

There can be some discomfort for the first few day after the braces are fitted. The force used by Six Month Smile is very light and there should be little to no pain after the first week. The teeth may become sensitive during the treatment; however, this is normal and should resolve when the braces are removed.

Not everyone is suitable for this treatment. Only cases where a significant improvement can be made in a reasonable time will be selected. Underlying conditions on existing teeth may mean the treatment cannot be performed. Your dentist will be able to advise you of the best course of action.

Avoiding hard foods such as nuts and crusty breads is advisable if you have opted for fixed braces, as the foods may dislodge the brackets. Eating heavily coloured foods may stain the braces, though if this happens your dentist will be able to restore them. It is best to take out removable aligners before eating or drinking.

Good oral hygiene is very important during treatment, but it can be slightly more challenging to clean your teeth when you’re wearing braces. Your dentist will show you how to best look after you teeth and suggest the best products to use.

Six Month Smiles can provide a 3D computer image as well as a model to accurately show what your teeth should look like after the procedure.

Yes. Regardless of how the teeth are moved, they need to be supported in place or they may start to move back. There are two types of retainers: a fixed retainer and a removable retainer. A fixed retainer is permanently bonded to the inside of the teeth, whereas the removable retainer is worn overnight.

The removable retainer is the main retainer and it is advisable to wear it every night while sleeping for the first year, and three to four nights a week thereafter.

The fixed retainer is the ‘backup’ retainer and is made of a very thin strip of metal that is invisible and very comfortable. The fixed retainer can last over two years but may require repair or replacement.

Your dentist will explain retainers in more detail.

Extractions are not required, and crowding relief is made by gently easing the point of contact between teeth with a polishing strip, creating space to allow the teeth to move into a better position.

The process of using a polishing strip to remove enamel between teeth is a safe and well-recognised procedure and does not damage the teeth.

In the rare circumstance there is extreme crowding, the dentist may suggest the removal of a front tooth in the lower jaw. You will be fully consulted and special investigations will be carried out before proceeding with any treatments.

There’s no catch. If you are over 16 years of age and not looking for a major alteration to your bite Six Month Smile could be the best solution for you.

Braces can be put on the inside of the teeth and are completely invisible. Plastic aligners can be used for patients that prefer a removable option.

Your dentist will be able to give you the best options for your individual case.
