How Gum Disease Sets In

Illustration of the stages of gum diseaseGum disease occurs when plaque builds up around teeth. Plaque is made up of a film of bacteria. Your body attempts to fight off this form of infection by causing the gum tissues to swell or bleed when you brush, floss or eat. This first stage of gum disease is referred to as gingivitis. Gingivitis can be reversed with regular cleanings and stringent home care routines.

If your gingivitis goes untreated, it will become periodontitis or periodontal disease. The gums and bone around your teeth will be destroyed, and you may not even be aware that it’s happening.

What You Can Do About Gum Disease

There are different treatment options for gum disease. These include deep cleanings, which are called scaling and root planing. You can also have surgery to reduce the depth of the pockets created by gum disease. Bone grafting surgery is another option. Finally, there is laser-assisted periodontal therapy, or LAPT. LAPT is available at Magical Smiles.

What Is LAPT?

LAPT uses a specific type of laser to address infection around your teeth. The laser releases short bursts of energy at precise frequencies. In turn, the infected tissue is removed and the bacteria that cause the infection are killed off. It’s safe with short recovery times, and your procedure is virtually painless.

What to Expect During Laser Gum LANAP

There are four different steps involved in your procedure. During the first, the laser removes the pocket lining. Then, hand instruments and an ultrasonic tool clean the surfaces of the tooth root. The laser disinfects the pocket and seals up the wound. Tissue is compressed against your teeth. As it heals, the gum can reattach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LAPT right for me?

There are several concerns that can make you a good candidate for LAPT. If you have had previous deep cleanings, but deep pockets remain between your gum and tooth, it may be ideal for you. You may have also had antibiotic treatment or other periodontal surgeries for your gum disease.

How many visits will I need?

If you have generalised periodontitis, we usually treat half of your mouth at one appointment. We’ll schedule each visit 1-2 weeks apart, which prevents a reinfection from happening. Each of the appointments takes about two hours. If you require localised treatment, we can typically complete it in one visit.

Will I be comfortable during my procedure?

Yes. Local anaesthetic is administered so that you don’t feel discomfort during your LAPT. We have other sedation options to further assist you.

Local anaesthetic is necessary to ensure you are comfortable while the doctor is treating the deep infected sites. Sedation options are available to assist you in being comfortable during therapy.
