Tips for keeping Healthy Smiles at Halloween

Halloween is just around the corner and we all know that for most children, Halloween means candy and lots of it! And that can be parents worst nightmare however here at Magical Smiles we believe Halloween can also be the time to teach our kids good oral habits for life without depriving them of Halloween treats, however in moderation.

To keep cavities away and protect your child’s smile this Halloween, Our Dentists at Magical Smiles recommends following these simple tips.

1. Halloween Candy vs. Cavities: Don’t Make Kids Choose

  • Denying your children the Halloween experience can send the entirely wrong message -- deprivation -- and make candy seem even more irresistible and may end up sneaking sweets or eating too much candy once they're out on their own

After your children get back from trick-or-treating or a party, go through their bags of Halloween candy together. Ask them to pick 3- 5 treat they want the most and get the unpicked treats out of sight.

At Magical Smiles we are one of the first ones in Australia to Launch CANDY BUY BACK programme where we exchange their left over treats with a special Halloween dental show bag.

Halloween also becomes good time to remind children that it isn't just excess candies etc if stay in the mouth longer, can also lead to cavities.

Letting children help decide what is a reasonable amount of candy to keep has benefits where they learn how to control their diets.

2. Set a Treat Time

  • With your child, set a “treat time” that may last long after Halloween and help promote healthy thinking about treats: Children learn about eating sweets in moderation that eating sweets shouldn’t be an all-day feast. Moderation is key.

    • Knowing they have a specific sweet time can help make children less inclined to think about eating sweets at other times of the day.
    • Limit the number of times a day your child eats sugary treats or snacks between meals. Serve snacks that will not harm your child’s teeth, such as vegetables, cheese, nuts or seeds.

3. Keep Teeth Brushing Fun

  • Try to replace toothbrushes every three or four months, so maybe make Halloween an occasion for getting your child a new brush. At magical smiles kids can choose from variety of kid sized tooth brushes which feature animals, animated characters and other colorful designs which we include in their show bag making tooth brushing more fun activity. Since kids like picking their own toothpaste so give them freedom to pick from gels or pastes, different colors and different flavors. Just ensure label contains fluoride.

4. Limit sugary treats at the end of mealtime while there is still plenty of saliva in the mouth as it helps to wash away the sugars and acids.

5. Drinking water after eating a sugary treat will also help wash away some of the sugars and acids.

6. Avoid soft, sticky treats that get stuck between teeth.

7. Always have your child brush and floss before going to bed.
